O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. She made it into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. The judges were shocked by this and advised the viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he never fell into the bottom 3. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced into the final two of the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
