O'Grady's parents include Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor and Jan O'Grady. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured in several commercials prior to shifting in Los Angeles in 1986. Her first job was model for Montgomery Ward model, where she also made several commercials. She first appeared on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was then cast as an actress in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
